How to play Ninefold: rules and first-grid tips
To play Ninefold, build words of four or more letters from a 3x3 grid of letters, and use the center tile in every word. Each tile can be used once per word. One hidden word uses all nine tiles, and finding it is the goal of the day.
That is the whole game. The rest of this page covers the details people ask about, plus a few tips for your first grid.
What are the rules of Ninefold?
Ninefold gives you nine letters in a 3x3 grid, with one tile in the center. The rules are short:
- Every word must have at least four letters.
- Every word must use the center tile.
- Each tile can be used once per word, though you can reuse tiles across different words.
- Words come from a common English word list, so rare dictionary words are not accepted.
- One hidden word uses all nine tiles. Find it to complete the day.
A counter shows how many of the grid's words you have found, such as "12 of 40 words", with a progress bar beside it. You do not need to find every word. The nine-letter word is the one that counts for your streak.
How do you enter a word?
Tap the tiles in order to spell a word, then press Enter. On a computer you can also type: letters build the word, Enter submits, Backspace removes the last letter and Escape clears it.
If a word is not accepted, the game says why: it is too short, it skips the center tile, you already found it, or it is not in the word list. Nothing is lost by guessing, so try anything that looks like a word.
When does a new grid come out?
A new grid arrives every day at your local midnight. Everyone plays the same grid for the same date. Puzzle #1 came out on October 25, 2026, and every earlier grid stays playable in the archive.
How does the streak work?
Your streak counts the days in a row you find the nine-letter word. Solve today's grid and the streak goes up by one. Miss a day and it starts again. Solving old grids in the archive is good practice, but it does not change your streak.
Progress is saved on your device only. There is no account, so a different browser or phone starts with a fresh streak.
What should you do on your first grid?
Start small. Find two or three four-letter words that use the center tile before you hunt for the long word. Short finds warm you up, and they often contain the stem of the nine-letter answer.
Then try these in order:
- Say the letters out loud. Hearing them in a new order breaks the pattern your eyes keep returning to.
- Look for a common ending. Endings like -ING, -ED, -ER and -LY show up in many long words. If you see I, N and G, set them aside and work with the six letters left.
- Use the shuffle button. It moves the outer tiles around and keeps the center in place, which is often enough to make a word jump out.
- Check the center tile. The nine-letter word uses every tile, so a candidate that leaves out the center is not the answer.
For a worked example of the ending trick, read how to find the nine-letter word in under two minutes. For a list of endings worth memorizing, see suffixes that unlock grids.
Can you share your result?
Yes. Once you have found a word, the Share result button copies a short line with the puzzle number, how many words you found and whether you found the nine-letter word, with no letters or answers included. Paste it anywhere without spoiling the grid for anyone else.
Is "nine find" the same game?
People sometimes search for Ninefold as "nine find" or "find the nine-letter word", which is a fair description. The aim is to find one nine-letter word hidden in nine tiles, with as many shorter words as you like along the way. The game itself is called Ninefold, and today's grid is on the home page.

Every day at your local midnight. Puzzle #1 was released on October 25, 2026, and past grids stay playable in the archive.

Your streak counts the days in a row you find the nine-letter word on that day's grid. Progress is saved on your device only, so playing on a new phone or browser starts fresh.
Why was my word rejected?
There are four usual reasons. The word is shorter than four letters, it does not use the center tile, you already found it, or it is not in the common English word list. The game tells you which one it is.
Can I type instead of tapping?
Yes. On a keyboard, type the letters, press Enter to submit, Backspace to remove a letter and Escape to clear the word.
