How to unscramble a nine-letter word
To unscramble a nine-letter word, count the vowels, place the most likely ending, pair up any repeated letters, and build the rest in short syllables. Most nine-letter words have three or four vowels and end in S, E, D, G, Y or N, so those two checks alone cut the guessing down a lot.
This guide is for a plain jumble with no grid: a newspaper anagram, a crossword clue, a Word Wheel, or the conundrum on the TV show Countdown, where players get 30 seconds to turn nine letters into one word. The numbers below come from counting the 1,664 nine-letter words in the common English word list that Ninefold grids are built from.
Step 1: How many vowels are there?
Count the vowels (A, E, I, O, U) before you move a single letter. In our count, 87 percent of common nine-letter words have three or four vowels:
| Vowels | Words | Share |
|---|---|---|
| 2 | 104 | 6% |
| 3 | 767 | 46% |
| 4 | 685 | 41% |
| 5 | 107 | 6% |
The count tells you how the word is put together. Three vowels usually means three syllables with consonant clusters between them. Four means the vowels are spread more evenly. If you have only two vowels, look for Y doing the job of a vowel, as in a word ending in -LY or -TY.
Step 2: Where does the word end?
Put the ending in place next. It is the strongest clue in a jumble, because a handful of letters end most words. Of our 1,664 words, 406 end in S, 261 in E, 218 in D, 189 in G, 131 in Y and 124 in N.
So check in this order:
- I, N and G present? Try -ING. All 189 words ending in G ended in -ING.
- An S? Try it last. About one in four nine-letter words is a plural or ends in S.
- E and D? Try -ED.
- O, U and S? Try -OUS.
- T, I, O and N? Try -TION, or -TIONS with an S.
Once the ending is set, you are working with five or six letters instead of nine. Our guide to the suffixes that unlock almost every grid covers more endings in detail.
Step 3: Is there a double letter?
Look for any letter that appears twice. In our count, 337 of the 1,664 words have the same letter twice in a row, about one in five. Repeats such as SS, LL, EE, OO, TT and FF tend to sit together, so try them as a pair before you split them up.
A double consonant also often marks where a stem meets its ending, as in BEGIN becoming BEGINNING.
Step 4: Build it in syllables, not letters
Do not try to place nine letters one by one. Group them into syllables of two or three letters, each built around one vowel, and move the syllables around instead. Nine loose letters have hundreds of thousands of possible orders. Three or four syllables have only a handful.
Two habits help here:
- Look for a start. CO, RE, IN and PR are the most common openings in our count.
- Look for two words. Many nine-letter words are compounds, such as workshops (work + shops) or highlight (high + light). If one short word jumps out, check whether the leftovers make another.
A worked example
Here is a jumble: S U O G D R A N E.
- Vowels: U, O, A and E. That is four, the second most common count.
- Ending: there is no G with I and N, but there is O, U and S. Set -OUS aside.
- Double letters: none.
- What is left: G, D, R, A, N and E. Two vowels for two syllables. Try a start: DAN. That leaves G, E and R, which make GER.
DAN + GER + OUS gives DANGEROUS.
What if you are still stuck?
Change how the letters look. Write them in a circle, say them out loud in a new order, or cover the letters of the wrong word your eyes keep finding. Our guide to finding the nine-letter word in under two minutes explains why a familiar wrong word gets in the way, and how to break its grip.

Frequently asked questions
How do you unscramble a nine-letter word?
Count the vowels, then try the most likely ending, such as -ING, -ED, -S or -OUS. Pair up any repeated letters, since they often sit together. Then build the rest in short syllables, each with one vowel. Write the letters in a circle if you get stuck on one wrong order.
How many vowels does a nine-letter word usually have?
Three or four. We counted the 1,664 nine-letter words in the common English word list Ninefold grids are built from: 767 have three vowels and 685 have four, together 87 percent. Only about 6 percent have two, and about 6 percent have five.
What is the Countdown conundrum?
It is the last round of the British TV game show Countdown. Players see two or three words with nine letters in total and have 30 seconds to buzz in with the single nine-letter word that uses every letter.
Is unscrambling the same as solving a Ninefold grid?
Close. A Ninefold grid is a nine-letter anagram with one extra rule: every word must use the center tile, which gives you a free check on any answer. The same steps work on both.
What if the letters spell two words?
Try them as a compound. Many nine-letter words are two short words joined, such as workshops or highlight. If one short word jumps out, check whether the leftover letters make another.
